Independent System Operator (ISO)
An independent entity who oversees and schedules all transmission activities. Responsible for maintaining instantaneous balance of the grid system by controlling the dispatch of the plants to ensure that loads match resources available to the system.

Investor-Owned Utility (IOU)
A for-profit company owned by investors/shareholders that provides utility services.
